Is this going to become a thing? Where every month I say this is my favourite riesling??
Yes. This is my new favourite Riesling for this year... well, so far.
This wine comes from a stony terroir of superior muschelkalck soil in Northern Alsace, super close to the German border. It is a set of three plots planted between 1967 and 2003 and wines grown on this soil are profiled to be ‘mineral’, ‘steely’ or ‘citrusey’ with incredible tension and length... so, perfect for superstar riesling.
She’s a very pretty drop, but with the goods to back it up -- power, length, persistence and yes, great mineral drive and tension. While I know we in Aus make world class riesling, it’s a wonder to me that we aren’t more attuned to these beautiful Euro expressions.
